Monday, February 19, 2007 Danny, Dougie, Tom and Harry are very cute and cuddly – and all the girls love them. But these four handsome youngsters aren't the familiar stars from the hugely successful British band McFly. Instead, they're from a litter of guide dog puppies that have just met their famous namesakes for the first time. The Golden Retriever pups, Dougie, Danny, Tom and Harry – who are just over three months old – made a special trip to London to catch up with the band who are promoting their forthcoming single, Transylvania. Says Tom from McFly: "I love dogs, and so it's just awesome to have a litter of guide dog pups named after our band! These puppies will one day make a huge difference to the lives of people with sight loss, and I'm really proud to be following them on that journey." McFly will follow the progress of the pups on their journey to become qualified guide dogs, as part of their new role as Guiding Stars for the famous Guide Dogs charity. As Guiding Stars, the band members will also help the charity to educate young people about the important work of guide dogs. Over 1,000 guide dog puppies just like Danny, Dougie, Tom, Harry and their littermates are born every year. There are currently 4,700 working guide dogs in the UK, and since guide dog training began in this country 75 years ago, over 25,000 of these special dogs have provided a life-transforming level of independence and freedom to their blind or partially sighted owners. |

Exclusive - Guitarist still loves playing live and can't wait to return to the regent In a time when the labelled boy band conjures up images of pop tunes, slick dance routines and perfectly manicured teenage lads. McFly are an unusual phenomenon. They play their own instruments, write their own songs, and don't have a dance routine in sight. As they prepare to return to Ipswich for another sell out gig, Helen Johns spoke to Danny Jones about the buzz of performing live. At the age of just twenty, Danny Jones has achieved more than most guys his age could dream of. He's enjoyed a string of hits with McFly, travelled the world and his regularly mobbed my thousands of adoring screaming fans. And with the McFly success juggernaut showing no sign of slowing down since the journey began 3 and half years ago, Danny say's he and the band are having a fantastic time. He said "I love it! It's awesome. Going on tour is great and writing songs is great!". "We write all the time and we've got loads of songs in the pipeline, the tour is going to be hearing all the singles and some new songs. Its going to be a great night out and a great event." "I love seeing the crowd going nuts to the songs, jumping around and being silly." Despite his youth, Danny cites Bruce Springsteen and The Who as his biggest musical influences and says that when it comes to performing he wants to emulate bands like the red hot chilli peppers. "I watched Bruce Springsteen as a kid and I thought 'I want to do that one day' and now I am, it's just amazing" he said. "What I love watching is bands like the chilli's because they are not like all other acts who have loads of lights and nice stuff around them." "With the chilli's they just come on, go nuts for the whole performance. That's a real highlight with them." In their time together McFly have played venues as big as Wembley or as small as theatres like the regent. "I like the big and the small gigs" Says Danny. "With the small gigs you get more nervous because the people are right there in front of you. But the big ones are just epic." "It's the best feeling, performing is amazing and the best rush you can get." But while the red hot chilli peppers are revered in rock circles the world over, being in a band that is most popular with teenage girl's means it can be difficult to gain a serious musical reputation. Danny said, "It is a struggle to be taken seriously but if you listen to the tunes and the songs we write, it's amazing." "A lot of the bands at the moment are all about being cool and indie. I don't love that music but I prefer it to the rubbish dance songs that used to be everywhere." "The typical top of the pops thing used to be to get up there and be a solo artist." "Now I see more bands coming through again, but we're not cool because we're a pop band. But the whole thing will come around again." He knows he can expect a regent theatre full of screaming girls when the band arrives here in April – and while they have yet to attract the serious rock bands he remains happy to entertain the sell out crowd. He said, "There's nothing wrong with lots of teenage girls jumping around to your music." "If the people who look down on us came to our gigs they wouldn't walk away disappointed, they would walk away genuinely surprised at how good we are at playing." "I would say just come along and listen rather than have an image about us straight away." And when it comes to other music being made at the moment, Danny also knows exactly what he thinks – and in particular the kind of songs and people who are made famous on television talent shows such as The X factor. After asking whatever happened to Steve Brookstein – and x factor winner in 2004, Danny said he thinks the latest winner Leona Lewis wont be given a fair enough chance to hold onto her fame. He wasn't a fan of her debut single which became the Christmas number one. He said, "Those people get the attention for a week – its there for a week and then its over. I feel sorry for them because there is hype when the people win but they just don't stick around. If I was Leona's manager I would want to see her as the next Whitney Houston or Toni Braxton." "The reason she won was because of the type of songs she sung. I want to write her a really big song something like I Will Always Love You." With McFly's time in the spotlight not looking likely to fade anytime song Danny says he wants to keep on making music for as long as he can. He said, "I thought the excitement about McFly had gone for a bit and it's really nice to have it still and know there is excitement about us." "As a band we do everything together, we live on the same street and even if we're not always in the band we will always be friends. But I think the band will last forever." McFly will be at the regent theatre on April 10th |

Ma mère me l'as offert un jour. [réfléchis longtemps] OK, j'échangerais Tom avec Gary Barlow de Take That. Pauvre tom! GIRL GOSSIP!

from the official mcfly boards There's never a dull moment in the world of McFly. They've just come back from Uganda where they've been for Comic Relief ("We love it there. It always makes you re-evaluate everything" says Harry) and they're getting ready to tour this spring, before they release their new single. And they've spent today talking to Richard Branson about performing in space in 2009. As you do. But for now, they're mostly talking about their hair. Tom is discussing their evolving hairstyles with our photographer, while Danny - with his new-look curls - is having a bad hair day. "That's why I'm wearing this hat. I tried to do it myself this morning and it didn't work. Do I use a diffuser? What's that? No, this is natural. I used to use straighteners before" We know we sound like our mums, but they're lovely young lads, are McFly. Even Dougie, the one who never used to say anything ever, is friendly and chatty with everyone these days. And when they're not bantering away, they're texting like teenagers (which they almost still are, anyway). We bet they're got tons of famous folk on their phones these days? "I've got Chris Evans. And Peter Kay, and Amir Khan. Yeah, mostly people from Bolton". We're impressed. Harry had everyone's worst texting nightmare the other day. "I was really annoyed and sent a message about someone to them by accident. I had to say I was sorry. I was being spoilt" Danny has just got a freaky text himself. "I don't know who it's from, but it's got me scared. It says 'Somebody told me you're two-faced but I stuck up for you. I said if you were really two-faced, there's no way you would use the ugly one all the time'. Nice that, isn't it?"

Interview: "I wonder what it feels like to be in love..." So Danny, tell us about your first girlfriend... I was 13 when i got my first girlfriends. She was one of the most popular girls in school - all the boys fancied her. Are you a romantic boyfriend? No! I'm not a cheesy person at all. I dont think I've ever had the chance to be really romantic. Tom's the cheesy one in the band - he does all the romantic things, like in the films. Have you ever said. 'i love you' to a girl? I've never told a girl I love her and no one's ever said it to me. I'd hate to be in a situation where someone tells you they love you, but you don't fell the same and just sya, 'Thanks!' How about giving a girl a cuddly toy? I'd never do that! I'd rather give her a concert ticket r something. I've never dated a girl who's wanted loads of presents from me. We bet you've written a poem for a girl thought, haven't you? I've never writtena poem gfor a girl, but i have written dongs about girl, not just for them! All our songs are about girls. They're usually half made-up anbd half based on real experiences. Tom's good at making up stories, but i'm not. Confession time! Have you ever made a girl cry? I have actually, when i started to ignore this girl and she got really upset. I can't even remember why I chose to ignore her, but we sorted it out. I'm really good with criers! So, are you looking for love now? I'm not sure. If it finds me, then i'll be ready, but i'm not looking. Well, i am, but not all the time. I don't know what i want. I wonder what it feels lke to be in love? It's never happened to me before. I mean, I've had strong feelings, but i dont think it was logve. It just feels right, doesn't it? In the future when you married, what do you think your wife will be like? I want an American wife actually. I was on holiday and I met this girl called Alison - she was amazng! I've never chatted up anyone like her in my life. I was so cuffed! Dream Date Ever wondered what it'd be like to go on a date with Danny? Well, here's your chance to find out... So, where are we going, Danny? To a concert - it's going to be wicked! Are you paying for everything? Of course, I'd expect you to offer to pay for something, but I wouldn't let you. What about food? How about a nice Italian? Will you take me back home afterwards? Yeah, and I'd try to get a kiss, too! Will you call me the next day? Well, if I liked you alot, I'd call you every day. When our relationship's over, how will you dump me? I'd just ignore you! I definatley wouldn't dump you by text - that's bad! |

New Harry Interview Mcfly guys Mcfly, are of course, well used to playing huge concert venues but on their 24-date tour they've decided to get 'up close and personal' with their fans for a set of intermate gigs in towns and cities "We just wanted to do a different kind of tour," explains drummer harry judd "When we released our last single last year we did loads of singing and noticed a real excitement. "It reminded us of how many awesome fans we had so we decided to come to different places and do some shows to people who may not have had the chance to see us perform live before." Harry adds that the band are aware that if you only do arenas and big conferences centres you come get more and more divorced from fans and they don't want that to happen. "These days with the internet and MySpace, you can really see the genuine passion of fans. It's great to be able to recognise that and go out and meet these people. All these big arenas, we go to the same cities every time, so it's good to go to other places and get up close and personal with our fans." The internet has obviously made the music scene very different, even from what it was when Harry and the rest of the boys were growing up and starting to play music, Through MySpace and the blogging sites, the bands and the fans can "talks" directly to each other. "When I was younger I was really into bands but the stars were more mysterious then so I think it is good that people have so much more access to us. "I would probably have been on MySpace and the blogs myself. It's cool, and it gets you into music. When I was 14 and really starting to get into music, I just bought CDs of all my favourite bands and all I did with my mates was go and jam and make music and talk about albums." Mcfly were meant to be releasing their new single, Baby's coming back, to tie with the up close and personal tour, but this has been delayed at their request because of their various commitments to other things, including Comic Relief. "We postponed the release until after the tour. We felt like, well we've been to Africa just recently and We've been doing all sorts of things and felt we really didn't have enough time to properly promote it so we thought that the best opportunity for people to hear it is on tour. "The majority of the fans who go to the tour dates will no the song but it's a good chance for them to hear it live first and get into it even more. That's the plan. "We went out to Uganda to do a film piece for Red Nose Day and have been on a few school tours, talking about our trip across to Uganda and getting the message across to people in schools how they can help. That's been good fun. "In my opinion, you can't do enough charity work. I know there are a lot of cynics out there who think that some charities don't work and that the pop groups shouldn't be involved, but we have been in the fortunate position where from a young age we're visited lots of hospitals in the UK and been to Africa and I've been out to India We've got a real passion for it." Harry Judd's visit to India was with a sports Relief Cricket team, the red socks, alongside the likes of Nick Hancock, Chris Evans, Patrick Kielty, Nick Knowles, Dermot O'Leary, Jack Russell, Jay Sean, Phil Tufnell and Rosalie Birch. In fact, Harry's a cricket fanatic. He picked up a cricket bat when he was four, He played at school (He went to the independent boarding school Uppingham school alongside Charlie Simpson of Busted), attended the MCC school of merit and went on to play at junior level county level. He got close to playing for England at junior levels but choose to become a drummer instead. For him, the up close and personal tour come not have come at a worse time, because he's trying to balance the heavy schedule of a 24-date tour with his desire to watch the cricket world cup in the west Indies. It certainly means that on this tour he isn't going out to clubs and parties when they come off stage. "Cricket will be prioritised over going out to clubs after the gigs. I could be extremely tired during this tour because I really want to follow every match." Although this tour is more low key than they are used to and without the huge teams of lighting and sound technicians, it's so intensive that they are not likely to get home very often. Therefore, Harry is having to make do with watching the cricket when he is at hotels. Home, he says, seems a long way off, but going from venue to venue, hotel to hotel, is what touring is all about. "Of course, by the end of the tour we are quite excited to be going home and I think sometimes half way thorough a tour when we are near London we will go home, but it is generally easier if we stay in hotels. "I think you tour more seriously if you are away all the time. When you are properly focused, trying to do a great performance every night. "It's great fun. It's great that we are doing a different kind of tour, It's not that were bored of doing arenas or anything, it is just that there is a different dynamic." The idea that such a well-established band has done only two extended arena tours may seem surprising until you remember that their first hit, 5 colours in her hair, only came out in 2004. It is just that they seem to have been at the top for a long time. "Yes, we're probably getting on people's nerves now, Of course, we've only known each other for four or five years and been in the public eye for only three years we are still very young, we're just 21. "We'll carry on for as long as possible but I don't want to be one of those guys who has been in a really successful band and when it splits up they go solo but nobody really cares and ends up doing all that celebrity bowling or whatever. "I reckon I'd slip back into normal life quite easily, but hopefully it won't come to that, not for a long time at least," •Mcfly are at the Colston hall, Bristol, on Tuesday, April 17; Oasis Leisure centre, Swindon, on April 19; Gloucester Leisure centre on May 1. Tickets, of course, sold out for all gigs almost as soon as they went on sale ©from the official boards |
