SCREAMING fans are expected to pack out the Hexagon at Reading when teeny boppers McFly take to the stage on Friday, May 4 as part of their sell-out tour.
Bass player and vocalist Dougie Poynter talked to features reporter Yvette Caster about life on tour, working with Lindsay Lohan, Xbox games and getting naked on stage.

What's it like being back on tour?
It's awesome. (He then complains there's no milk. Then finds some powdered milk).
Why did you decide to play at smaller venues like the Reading Hexagon?
As it's called The Up Close and Personal Tour it wouldn't have made sense to do it in an arena. And we wanted to see boobs up close.
But aren't most of your fans 15 and under?
No, they're not, they're usually older - sometimes we have 35-year-olds there.
What's it like being the baby of the group?
It's ok.
Do you get treated any different?
Not really...a little different. When I was 15 maybe I was.
Have you ever been to Maidenhead and, if so, what did you do there?
Yes, I do remember the name. I can't remember what I did.
Why did you support Comic Relief recently?
We'd do anything for Comic Relief. We got involved two years ago and after that it's hard not to do anything - cause we've been to Uganda. It's something else.
What's your favourite McFly song?
I don't know - it depends if I'm listening to it or playing. I like playing Too Close For Comfort. I like listening to Little Joanna - I like all the little key changes in it and me and Tom spent absolutely ages on the lyrics.
What can people expect from your live shows?
The Up Close and Personal tours are a little different to arenas - it's just us four on stage.
How often do you argue with the other band members and what about?
Fifa on the Xbox. We argue a lot about that because me and Danny kick ass at it and the others suck at it.
Which of you was most embarrassed about appearing naked in your Please, Please, Please video and at the live performance of it?
I don't think any of us were. It was funny. I think Harry was at the show - he just felt a bit silly 'cause he was left on his own.
You've worked with Charlotte Church and Lindsay Lohan. Who do you fancy more?
I don't know. I'd have to get the bra sizes.
What was it like filming Just My Luck with Lindsay?
It was fun - she's a nice girl.

I'd be a gynaecologist. It's a very sophisticated profession.

Japanese fans give really good presents - they gave me an R2-D2 phone once.

I've bought a house and a car. It's a Honda Ute.

A teenager was on cloud nine after McFly stopped by his North Wales home to say hello.

Illness forced Rhyl fan Mikey McCormick to cancel a trip to meet the chart-toppers band ahead of a gig in Liverpool.

So the 14-year-old got the surprise of his life when the band pulled up in their huge tour bus outside his home and paid him a visit, reports the North Wales Daily Post.

Mikey, a pupil at Blessed Edward Jones High School, suffers from a serious heart condition.

His uncle John McCormick, 51, said: "He is absolutely bonkers about McFly. He is not able to go to school that much, so he spends a lot of time at home, and listens to a lot of their music."

He added: "They just walked in like any other visitor. It was a real shock for him. He was thrilled."

They spent a large part of the afternoon talking to Mikey and watching live DVDs of their shows with him in his room.

"What is normal life?" Dougie asks. "We will go on making music for as long as it sells", adds Tom, while Harry interrupts: "There was this man in his 60s in the fourth row the other night, and we were playing. This is what we do. You get used to it. And every day, something amazing happens."

Danny: I'm more spotty...and I'm cleverer.
Tom: Apart from the fact that 'cleverer is not a real word!

Tom: I've got taller. I've grown up this year. I think all of us have - in a nice way though.
Harry: I've learnt more stuff about the world - about running a flat and things like taxes and pensions and stuff.
Dougie: I've changed quite a lot 'cause I was only 15 when I left home. My dad left two weeks before I joined the band and I haven't spoken to him since. That's probably why I was so quiet at first. I'm close to my mum though - I tell my mum everything.

What's the most boring thing about being a pop star?
Harry: Traffic and flying.
Tom: Yeah, hours sitting in cars.
Danny: Waiting around. It's always hurry up and wait.
Dougie: I don't like doing the red carpet stuff. I feel stupid. When a bigger celebrity comes along, you never know whether to walk off or stay and look stupid.

Do you like being famous?

Harry: Ha,ha! Between us we might be, but not individually. Tom probably is 'cause he writes the most songs.
Dougie: Tom is, definatly. We joke about it all the time.
Tom: It's none of your business!

Who's got the poshest house out of you?
Harry: Tom. It's massive and it's perfect - he's got chandeliers and stuff. Danny and Dougie live in flats in the same block, but Tom's got a four-bedroom house.
Tom: Harry's just done his place up though, and Danny's is the cosiest. Dougie's is like going into a tropical rain forest. He has his heating up full - it's like walking into a furnace.
Danny: And all you hear is the sound of crickets and lizards.
Dougie: The only reason Tom's is the poshest is 'cause he bought a show house so it came fully furnished. He just moved in!

If you ever got married, would you ever sell your pics to a post mag?
Dougie: Er,for enough money.£500,000? That's not enough. A million....like, yeah!
Danny: No way!
Tom: They pay for the wedding, but I still don't think I'd consider it.
Harry: I'd like to think I wouldn't, but if times got hard I might.

Is being famous everything you thought it would be?
Dougie: Playing live shows is all I've ever wanted, so yes. Recording is cool, but there's a lot of sitting around, so you just get fat eating pizza.
Tom: It's much better than I imagined. I hoped we'd have success and go on tour and have No1s, and we've had a chance to do it. It's amazing.
Harry: Now and again it's quite cool. I'm just normal - I go shopping and go home and just eat beans on toast!

Bad hair days and girl trouble

You would think that being in Britain's biggest pop band would mean getting a girl would be the last of your problems.But McFly bass player and vocalist Dougie Poynter says he is having a major dry patch at the moment: "I've been blowing out with the girls big time. I have had the worst luck recently. I just keep getting knock-backs."

And guitarist and vocalist Danny Jones added frankly: "He can't get laid!"

The boys were talking to the Herald Express before going into rehearsals for McFly's Greatest Hits tour, which comes to Torquay in October and is selling out fast.

"You would have thought it would be a lot easier. But I think it's just about the same for us as it is for other boys," said Dougie, the youngest member of the band which shot to prominence in 2004 when they beat The Beatles to become the youngest band ever to debut at number one with their first album.

Dougie thinks one of the reasons for his girl troubles is his disastrous hair: "I look like a dog. My hair got really long when we were on holiday in Barbados this summer and it started to dread on its own. So I decided to get some dreadlocks professionally done when I got back home.

"This guy came to the house and did it. It looked awesome for about four days. I was so excited.

"Then after four days I woke up at about four in the morning and my head was itching. So I washed it and now I've got a massive Afro. I look weird.

"I'm not sure what I'm going to do now. I've just left it and I'm seeing what happens.

"I've just been wearing hats, but I don't think the girls like it."

And all this from a guy voted "Britain's Top Mop" in the 2005 Smash Hits awards.

So, while we're on the subject of girls, did he fancy Lindsay Lohan when fellow band member and drummer Harry Judd had his famous one-night with the Hollywood good-girl-gone-wild, when the band appeared with the actress in hit teen chick flick Just My Luck?

"It was two years ago now, but I think I fancied her. She's not really the type of girl I would typically go for."

Which celebrity is his type?

"I can't think of one. I don't really go for celebrity types. I seem to have this weird thing where every four months I get totally obsessed with one girl. I meet a girl and I just think she's the coolest thing ever created. Then I get blown out and it all starts all over again."

Danny, who is now happily in a long-term relationship, said he wasn't jealous of Harry's Lindsay Lohan experience either.

"I pulled her mate: the fitter one," he claimed.

The Hollywood experience provided the band with material for their number one: Please Please, which included the line "please, please Lindsay".

McFly's Greatest Hits Tour is at Torquay's Riviera International Centre on Monday, October 8. Tickets are still available, although there are limited places available on the balcony, which is the only place where under-14s are allowed.
